FAQs

Following are a few of the common questions we are regularly asked. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have regarding our company, the services we offer, or a special project you are considering.

Q?

What do we do first?

A.

A successful project begins with a detailed set of plans. This means doing your homework by studying magazines, books, or other homes to determine the type of design you want.

Once you have selected a design and have a set of plans the next step is to create a list of the features you prefer. Flooring, plumbing, electrical, heating systems, etc.

We would then meet with you to review and discuss your plans and requirements in order to start preparing a quote for the project.

Q?

How many quotes should I get?

A.

Two or three quotes from reputable contractors is sufficient. It is very important that all contractors get exactly the same information so that they are quoting on the same job. Otherwise you will not be comparing 'apples to apples' so to speak.

Q?

Who looks after arranging plumbers, electricians, painters, etc.?

A.

This is up to you. You may look after these trades people or we can do it for you. We can manage all aspects of the project from having someone dig out and pour the basement foundation to final painting and landscaping. We can provide full turn-key service.

Q?

Do I sign a contract?

A.

Yes, after everything is confirmed a contract will be drawn up outlining the work to be done and the costs associated with the work.

Q?

Do I have to make any special financial arrangements?

A.

We generally like to make 5 'Draws' on a new home construction project but that may vary depending on your bank. Your obligation is to have sufficient financing in place to pay these draws within 30 days recognizing that banks often pay only a small portion of what has actually been billed. You should discuss your financial needs with your lender to ensure adequate funds are in place for your project.

Q?

What about changes once work has begun?

A.

Generally speaking, unless it is too late, anything can be changed. Realizing of course that any changes will need to be confirmed in writing and signed by the client. In most cases, changes will affect the quoted contract price and will be charged as "An Extra" and billed accordingly.

Q?

Do I have any guarantee on my home?

A.

We are members of the Atlantic Home Warranty Program and the Nova Scotia Home Builders' Association. Information about these organizations can be found on their website.

Q?

Do you have Liability Insurance?

A.

Yes, and this can be confirmed for you at one of our meetings.

Q?

Do you have Worker’s Compensation Coverage?

A.

Yes.

Q?

We live outside of the area. Where can we find information about accomodations if we would like to stay or visit during construction?

A.

We can put you in touch with people who have cottages and/or homes available to rent.
